Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Hayche GRiiiM

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Hayche GRiiiM

Who are you?

I’m Hayche GRiiiM. I’m an up and coming rapper/producer/spoken word artist hailing from Leicester. I have been refining my art since the tender age of 13 and in that time I’ve released three free mixtapes. Having performed at a variety of events and stages, I’m now ready to take the next step and have been working tirelessly to find “my own sound”. Stitching together a seamless mix of hip hop and blues, I am putting the finishing touches on my debut album entitled “For The Love Of”, which is due for release this year.

What’s your art?

A rich blend of hip hop and blues. Telling a story unique to myself whilst also touching on topics affecting the working class and minorities of all backgrounds.

What’s coming up for you?

An album due for release this year entitled “For The Love Of”, a collaborated mixtape with long time friend and collaborator Def Ninja entitled GRiiiMDef, and another surprise in store that will be revealed closer to the time.

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Emily Merchant

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Emily Merchant

WHO ARE YOU?

Hello, I’m Emily; vertically challenged, graphic designer, typography enthusiast, Welsh dragon, tea addict, bundle of sarcasm and soon-to-be nomad. I’m terrible at mental maths, I have a newly acquired obsession with peanut butter and I love dogs (I scream almost 99% of the time that I see one). How do you do?

WHAT’S YOUR ART?

My art is graphic design and hand-drawn typography (although I am hopelessly out of practice, or time to practice); I decided to begin freelancing before I left University in 2014 and had been successfully managing several projects, alongside a full-time graphic design job in Leicester ever since. More recently however I left my full time job and made the transition into becoming a full-time freelance graphic designer, which I am immensely excited about.

I specialise in a range of disciplines aimed at small/startup to medium sized businesses, including (but not limited to) graphic design, brand development, web design and illustration. I have also worked with a broad range of industries, sectors and business sizes, providing me with some great design challenges and the opportunity to meet and work with the people behind the business.

In my free time (laughs hysterically) I love to illustrate typography, be it quotes, single words or more often than not, swear words – firstly because I can turn something not so pleasant into something pretty and interesting, but mostly because it annoys my mother. *evil laughs*

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR YOU?

1. I’m leaving the UK!
The recent turn of events (note the becoming full-time freelance mentioned above) also coincides with my impending departure from the UK to begin travelling around Europe, which is actually in 5 days time! Yikes! You can keep in touch with me and my other half, Bartek, who is well known in the HoV community via our joint travel page – Just BE.

I am more than sure that this kind of lifestyle will tie in well with my business type and open me up to many new opportunities and an abundance of inspiration as I go.

2. Freelance, freelance, freelance
My new career decision also means that I need to step my game up with a fresh new look for my website (which is underway) and a deliciously-designy portfolio to send out to new potential clients. I’m equally as excited and anxious about all of these new pathways I will get to explore along my way, so stay tuned! You can connect with me via my Facebook design page – EM Design Studio – or via my website (soon to be changing) – www.emilymerchant.co.uk.

In the mean time, check out my most recent typographic project below which was created for a collaboration with many HoV ladies for International Womens Day 2017.

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Charles Wheeler

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Charles Wheeler

Who are you?

I’m Charles Wheeler, a writer, performance poet and activist from Leicester. As well as House of Verse, I can often be found at open mics around the city.

I organise politically with Leicester Socialist Party, campaigning to stop cuts to public services and build a fairer society. I’m also co-ordinating our local activity with BadArt, an anti-capitalist protest art group affiliated to the Party’s international organisation, Committee for a Workers’ International. We’re planning our first BadArt Leicester showcase night in September.

I cover rugby union and American football for live blogging site ByTheMinute [http://bytheminute.co]. We always need new writers, and you don’t need any approval to set up your own live blog of absolutely anything (but we have a weekly schedule of events, including sports, TV and news, if you need some suggestions to pick from).

I also write for Great Central, a free magazine and website about the wonderful Leicester cultural scene. The magazine is available in the coolest places in the city, and it’s free. Take one. Just take it! Go on, nobody’s looking.

I’m also a pro wrestling referee, and I have pet rats, the most wonderful animals I know…

What’s your art?

Primarily poetry, both written and spoken. I often address political themes, because politics to me is simply the organisation of human life, and as such, it’s relevant to everything and everything is relevant to it. I touch on themes of mental health, particularly my own experiences with Asperger Syndrome. But it’ll be about anything, really.

I started writing poetry in earnest after getting burnt out with long-form fiction during my Masters’ degree. It’s an awesome rush to be able to write something in the morning, memorise it in the afternoon and perform it to instant feedback in the evening. Although I usually practice a little more than that. And then mess stuff up anyway. But who cares?! It’s just liberating and empowering to be able put thoughts out there, and the Leicester scene in particular has tons of opportunities for everyone from every background to do that.

What’s coming up for you?

A bunch of things!

I’ll next be popping round the House of Verse on 15th July at the Music Café. Keep an eye on:

http://www.facebook.com/thehouseofverse for the details…

I’m frequently found at Find the Right Words, a spoken word open mic night usually on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at Upstairs at the Western, run by the brilliant Jess Green and Toby Campion.

https://www.facebook.com/FindTheRightWords/

Obviously with a General Election coming up, Leicester Socialist Party will be very active. We’re not standing any candidates this time, as we’re supporting Labour under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. Our two branches meet for political discussions and organisation every Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30pm, usually either at the Barley Mow on Granby Street or Secular Hall on Humberstone Gate, and we have a stall in town for a couple of hours every Saturday opposite the Highcross. Come along and have a chat if you’re interested in building a better world! Find out more about what we think and what we’re up to at:

http://twitter.com/LeicsSocialists …and the national website at: http://socialistparty.org.uk

The election has unfortunately forced us to postpone the first BadArt show, which was scheduled for June, but that just means we’ll have even more time to plan and make it amazing. We’re currently aiming for a September date at Upstairs at the Western. In the meantime, we’re gonna be holding monthly-ish meetings at Madison’s Café on London Road, where much like the Socialist Party meetings we’ll have a discussion and a chat about our activities. If you’re interested in the arts’ role in social justice, come on down! You can keep up with our local BadArt activity at:

https://www.facebook.com/BadArtLeicester/ …and check out the international website at: http://badartworld.net/

Housemates Tuesdays: Introducing… Bartek Dąbrowski

Housemates Tuesdays: Introducing… Bartek Dąbrowski

Who are you?

My name is Bartek Dąbrowski and I’m a guitarist and busker living in Leicester (but not for much longer). I travel around UK and share my emotions, feelings (music) with all of the people I meet.

What’s your art?

My art is music… My music is pure self-expression, it comes from within. My inspirations are drawn from my surroundings, experiences and emotions, whether past or present, which are then turned into melodies and rhythms that allow an audience to connect not only with me, but with each other and the environment around them. I can take you on a journey through time and through the universe. I can provide you with healing tones and inspiring vibrations. Everyone can connect with my music and depending on what you need, or what you want to receive, your experience can be truly personal, intimate and unique.

What’s coming up for you?

Actually, these are my last 2 months (well, 1.5) in the UK as I’m going to be leaving in June to travel around Europe! But before I leave you can find me at a few more events, hope to see you there.

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Leanne Moden

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Leanne Moden

Who are you?

My name’s Leanne Moden, and I’m a poet, performer, event organiser and general show-off from Norfolk, now living in Nottingham. (Because I can only live in places that begin with an N apparently…) I run the Crosswords Spoken Word Open nights in Nottingham city centre, and generally spend my time gallivanting around the UK telling poems wherever I can.

What’s your art?

I do poems. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re sad, sometimes they’re a bit rude. As a performer, I’ve always been interested in challenging audience preconceptions, using poetry and humour to talk about themes that are important to me. In reality, this means I write about sex, food and politics, pretty much without exception. My stuff is usually light-hearted and engaging, and I’m obsessed with formal rhyme schemes and rhyming couplets. I love writing about the things that other poets won’t talk about, and I really like using surreal imagery to examine the absurdity of everything.

In the past, I’ve shared my stuff at shows across the UK, including events at Trinity College Cambridge, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Bestival on the Isle of Wight, and I’ve competed loads of poetry slams including Hammer and Tongue, Poetry Rivals, the Anti-Slam and the Camden Roundhouse Slam. In fact, one of my proudest ever moments was being called ‘fucking hilarious’ by Kat Francois at the Camden Roundhouse Slam in 2012; she’s a huge influence on my writing so it was an amazing compliment to receive!

What’s coming up for you?

Next week, I’m doing lots of bits and pieces as part of the Nottingham Poetry Festival including:

After that, I’m going to have a well-earned break for all of five-minutes, before heading out on the festival circuit for the Summer. This year, I’ll be performing at WOMAD, Gate to Southwell Festival, Badbury Rings Festival in Southampton, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

We’ll also have lots of poetry-based fun at Crosswords Spoken Word Open Mic, which runs every second Wednesday of the month in the caves under the Malt Cross pub in Nottingham. Check out our facebook page for all the dates and details: https://www.facebook.com/crosswordsopenmic/

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Elysian

Housemate Tuesdays: Introducing… Elysian

Who are you?

We are Elysian. Our names are Lon and Celia, Lon plays beautiful, rhythmic guitar lines and Celia blasts out some powerful, deep vocals. Celia was classically trained for 8 years, which taught her a great deal of vocal control and formed her vibrato rich voice and her large range. Lon learned guitar at school then went on to study Music Technology and Innovation at university, which further fuelled his passion for music. We love playing gigs and festivals around the midlands and hope soon to branch out to cities further afield. Last year we travelled together and played open mic nights along the way, in Amsterdam, Berlin and Budapest. This has to be our favourite experience on our musical journey so far. We also run our own open mic night down at Pi Bar, on Narborough Road.

What’s your art?

Music, music and more music. It’s basically our whole, entire lives. Celia loves to sing; she sings in the bath, whilst washing up, at work, on the bus, pretty much everywhere and Lon plays guitar at every available opportunity. We have many musical influences ranging from blues to soul to jazz and reggae. We play a mixture of our own, original music and covers. The covers are always played in our own, unique style, often very differently to the original track. We enjoy taking music we love and giving it our own soulful, upbeat twist. Our own music is off-beat, chilled out and often written about our personal life experiences. Our sound has been described as “A sound that would slot nicely into any cabaret, smoke-filled, whiskey-clinking, limelight, lost nights, three-dollar cigarettes soundscape, or equally a nice sunny day on a public park”. Think, Aretha Franklin or Nina Simone if they had been in to reggae music!

What’s coming up for you?

This year we are playing at a couple of wedding receptions, doing a few festivals including Glastonbudget and Western Park Festival and playing numerous gigs around Leicester and the surrounding areas. We are planning to travel Eastern Europe later in the year and perform along the way, as we loved it so much last year. We are working on expanding our repertoire and of course writing more original music. We have also begun to expand from a two piece in to a full band with drums, bass and saxophone. This is a brand new challenge that we are all really getting stuck in to. Although it is early days with this, it’s already sounding fabulous. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that one!
